Once you are following the person who gets retweeted a lot, is not following too many people, and has a lot of followers, how can you turn that person into my marketing channel?  This is the holy grail of Twitter marketing and a place where many dodgy marketers and incompetent Twitter marketers fail.  The bottom line of this is that these people are your sales men.  You must get it in your head that these are the people that you need to work with to get your message out.  They are not your enemies, they are not unapproachable celebrity idols, and they are not distant faceless individuals who will not benefit you.  They are none of these things.  If approached correctly, these people could make your name.

It has happened before, it is happening now, and will continue to happen because that is how Twitter is structured— where an obscure message, when filtered through the right channels, achieves critical mass and just truly explodes all over the world.  The Arab spring broke out like this.  Also the infamous Kony 2012 awareness campaign was launched this way.  It is extremely powerful, but then again you have to do it right.

The first step to doing it right, as we have mentioned in previous posts, is to follow the right people.  They must be influential people.  The next step is to use the @ sign religiously.  Use it to communicate with influential people and send them a lot of @ messages.  Do not spam them and do not send them garbage. Instead, send them messages to let them know that you are paying attention to their tweets; that you are contributing to the discussion by giving them content; and that your content is competent. Hence, you are a credible discussion partner.  You have to hit all three points or else you will fail, get black listed, or get booted as a spammer.  This is a tight rope you are walking.  The bottom line is you must employ the three tips above and do it courteously, professionally, and with confidence.

When sending these @ messages, a key point to remember is to prepare for disappointment.  If you send 100 @ messages and you expect 100 @ messages back, prepare to be disappointed.  This is a ‘numbers game’ you are playing.  Your list of people you are following must be long so that you can send out a lot of these @ messages. Hopefully, because of just playing the numbers game, some of them will respond back favorably.  This must be individualized.  You cannot copy and paste and send the same content over and over again to different people.  That will certainly get you banned.  You have to pay attention to what they are saying.  Send a message that is on point, builds credibility, shares content, and is appropriate.

This will take some of your time.  Of course this cannot be done for a few minutes in a day.  This should take the place of you chatting with your friends over instant messaging.  Make this a part of your daily routine.  The payoff will quite be substantial because if the right person mentions your content and tweets it to their huge followers, the chances of your content being viralized and being retweeted by many other people will just explode than if you were going to rely on your own Twitter feed’s credibility.  Put in the time to make this happen and you will achieve favorable results.
